I first heard of Metric when I was watching my daily dose of Videowflow on Canada's MuchMusic. The video was for the song 'Dead Disco' and it captured my attention right away. Not just because of the artistic New Year's Eve-style layout of the video itself, but because of the song that made me thirsty for more. Emily Haines, frontwoman of Metric, has analluringly sweet surface, but the mood she sets is both satirical and self-parodical.
The legacy of Metric began in their hometown Toronto, but fate moved them to Montreal then Brooklyn where they formed what is now Metric. Their debut album, 'Grow Up and Blow Away' (1998), unfortunately didn't get the attention they desired. So Metric signed a deal with L.A.'s Indie Restless Records, which drove them to release a second album, 'Old World Underground Where Are You Now?'. Almost immediately, one of the band’s new demos, the punchy power-popper 'Combat Baby', became a regular on Nic Harcourt’s influential KCRW show Morning Becomes Eclectic.
The album’s new-day questions that the lyrics voice are trying to make sense of a world where war coverage feels like just another reality TV show ('Succexxy'); where class lines are drawn with velvet ropes ('The List'); and where rock stars retrace history’s steps under the delusion that they’re breaking new ground ('Dead Disco'). “This band,” says Emily, “will always take new shapes.”
