Ok, many of you have been kind enough to make submissions into the Suggestion Box and I think that’s really great. Sleepy is the reining “Suggestion Queen.” Anyway, I want to thank you for your submissions because quite frankly I don’t have time to search for new artists these days. I’ll try and keep up with the submissions, and hopefully one day in the near future I’ll even get to feature some of the artist’s music. Maybe I’ll even do a few artists at a time. Ooh, won’t that be fun!
Well, I checked out some of the suggested artists and I wanted to tell you what I thought of them:
One Night Stand is a band with three chicks and one lonely dude. Or is he lonely...? Hey, with three girls, I guess it's hard for a guy to feel lonely! Anyway, their music is on the verge of being pop-rock, but somehow they manage to prevent their music from crossing that horrible line. So they're catchy and perky enough to be fun, but not pop-y enough to be annoying. Their vocal harmonies are really great, too!
I checked out Sarah Hudson right after I listened to One Night Stand, and the two sounds were oddly familiar. Sarah, though, seems to be more on the pop-rock side. I checked out one of her videos and she's definitely got an original style, but I couldn't quite figure out if it was her style or someone else's, if you know what I mean. She practically humped the ground for almost the whole length of the video. But she's got something interesting going on with her sound.
I'm telling you, the Riff Randell's "Mississippi Hotdog" is just plain fun! Quite a punk influence in there, but they pull off their sound well.
I hadn't checked out the Yeah Yeah Yeah's out before, but I think I'm gonna have to. Karen O definitely took a course in Polly Jean 101!
There's a connection between Julie Doiron and Cat Power and Sarah Slean. Julie's got a nice folk sound, very calm and wholesome. Beautiful voice, too.
I'd added Simon Wilcox earlier but I didn't get to talk about her. She's got an incredible voice. And a great sound. Her song "Mommies & Daddies" is catchy and up-beat, but her voice is so sultry and deep that it prevents it from sounding to "dreamy." The video for that song is pretty cool, too.
Enjoy! And remember, if you’ve got any music news you’d like to share, please let us know!
